Power users can use the _pen tool_ to draw or paint freehand in a canvas. The pen tool is an extremely powerful tool. It’s sometimes referred to as the “wand tool,” and it’s at the same time one of the most difficult and frustrating to master. For a basic program, a price tag of about $800 in 2010, Photoshop’s features are more than enough for graphic designers, photographers, and others who are serious about image editing. Figure 6-1 shows an example of a canvas in Photoshop. In this book, I assume that you’re familiar with the basic tools in Photoshop, so I leave the description of the tools in this section to thematic chapters. Illustrations by Lisa Johanson. Figure 6-1: Most of the features I cover for basic photo editing will be familiar to you if you’re a Photoshop user, but be prepared to learn some tricks along the way. Photo by Lisa Johanson. Understanding Photoshop Layers Photoshop contains a unique way of working that includes a set of tools that work with each layer. Layers can be thought of as similar to frames on a photo printout, such as in a four-by-six-inch frame. All the elements of a photo fit into layers, so layers are a way to organize and manage an image. When you select the Eyedropper tool and select a color in the image you can see the color in the color well, or _canvas,_ next to the wand tool. Photoshop makes your choices easier by grouping image elements into the same layer. While some organizations require you to group items on a layer, this book will assume you use a layer for each group of images unless the instructions say otherwise. The Layers dialog box In the Layers dialog box (Figure 6-2), you can organize an image into layers to control which part of the image is visible, what color it is, what effect is applied to the image (if any), and so on. Photoshop Layers If you’re not familiar with using layers in Photoshop, I highly recommend that you start reading about layers. Adobe describes a complicated process in Photoshop, but in a nutshell, layers are a way of organizing an image or photo into different groups or layers that affect how the image appears. Figure 6-2: The Layers dialog box lets you control how your image looks.

This article originally appeared at Al Jazeera. An alarm went off in the office of the police chief of the northern Israeli city of Safed on Wednesday morning. This has nothing to do with Islam or terrorism, he was told. The chief, who did not want his name published for fear of political repercussion, was most likely to be the main topic of discussion at the conference he was organizing for some of the world’s most renowned Muslim scholars. The purpose of the conference was to create a platform of peace between Jews and Muslims, the chief said. One of the speakers scheduled to attend was the imam of the famous Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, Sheikh Hamad Badawi. The chief expected to have a quality audience with participants from both sides of the political spectrum. However, when Badawi took the stage, he was interrupted and booed by the audience. The sheikh, who is the Palestinian representative of the West Bank city of Ramallah, had delivered a sermon which had reportedly been criticized by Israeli authorities. The imam had called for a nationwide “Shahadah Movement” to retake Al-Aqsa, the third holiest shrine in the Islamic world, according to the chief. In the past, Badawi has told Al Jazeera that he would never renounce violence. “We will never give up the right to use violence,” he told the Arabic-language broadcaster last month. The blood of the innocent is not in our hands. If anyone touches the sanctity of our al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, it is us to respond,” he said. Badawi declined to comment on the affair to Al Jazeera at the time. However, an Israeli security official told AFP that the speaker was considered a “terrorist leader” with radical views who “bitterly opposed” the state of Israel and had called for “every Muslim to make hijra [migration] to Jerusalem.” The official declined to give the name of the imam, saying “we do not make such disclosures” and “it’s not always possible to trace one’s identity.” He said that Badawi was not prepared to speak to the Israeli media at this stage. ‘Troubling trend’
