Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system developed by Roblox Corporation that allows users to program games and play games created by other users. For most of Roblox’s history, it was relatively small, both as a platform and a company. Roblox is free to play, with in-game purchases available through a virtual currency called Robux. As of August 2020, Roblox had over 164 million monthly active users, including more than half of all American children under 16. Although Roblox has received generally positive reviews from critics, it has faced criticism for its moderation, microtransactions, and exploitative practices directed toward children.

For the first 1.5 years of Roblox’s existence, the platform was virtually unknown; it was a simple website that allowed users to upload games and play games created by other users. The site did not have a built-in game development toolset, and users were limited to using simple scripting languages such as LUA, Python, and JavaScript for game creation. Baszucki eventually introduced a game development toolset that allowed users to create full 3D games using the Lua language. The platform released its second version in June 2009.

The popularity of the platform exploded in 2011 after a Roblox user launched a new game called “Game Creator” that allowed users to create both 2D and 3D games in the Roblox platform. This game added new ways for users to upload games (similar to YouTube) and helped drive the platform’s growth to almost 4.5 million monthly users.[1][2][3] Roblox started accepting in-game purchases through Robux in 2012. That same year, Roblox was acquired by Roblox Corp, a privately held company founded by 20 students from the USC Interactive Media Institute.
