After inputing new value into textfield, label’s value is blank

I’m going through a js tutorial that’s introducing me to JQuery. I have completed the first tutorial. I am having a bit of a problem that I am hoping someone can help me with.
In the first tutorial, the author created 2 textfields and a button. Once the button is clicked, the value of the 2 textfields get appended to an AJAX form. The problem is when I input a value into either textfield and click the button, the value I input into the textfield does not get added to the AJAX form. When I then click the button again to update the AJAX form, I notice that the value I inputted earlier on is blank!
Can someone help me figure this out?
