Historically, Photoshop was created by Thomas Knoll, originally working for NeXT as the lead engineer, and Ed Catmull who became its president. It was named Photoshop by Adobe Systems Inc. and released in 1997.
The software has continued to grow over time. Adobe puts out a multitude of updates to improve its features and incorporate new technologies. When a new version of Photoshop comes out, the product is usually fully compatible with the previous version.
When discussing Photoshop, most people refer to editing tools. Photoshop has a lot of features that perform a variety of functions on images. These functions typically include the following:
The main file and project browser
The main editor that can perform functions such as creating or modifying a file, performing image effects, and applying either layer styles or spot healing
The Brush tool
The Pencil tool
The Type tool
The Dodge tool
The Burn tool
Some of Photoshop’s most popular features can be found within the Layers group.
Layers can be thought of as a “sub-document” of your image. Each layer is composed of pixels. The pixels for each layer on a document can be edited independently of the pixels for other layers.
Many products claim to create layers. However, layers are only added to the Photoshop file as objects. You can create new layers, duplicate existing layers, move layers, and merge layers.
The only way to edit the pixels of a layer is to add it to a blank layer. Creating layers is a two-step process. First you need to create an empty layer. Then you need to place the object you want to display within that empty layer. After you’ve created the object within the image, you can change the objects’ shape and properties. Layers can contain objects of virtually any type. This is possible because they are all objects in Photoshop. Photoshop layers have an order. An object placed at the bottom of the layer will appear at the top when rendered.
A Layer mask can be thought of as an extra layer which, when applied to the image, allows you to modify the pixels which are already there.
The Blend tool allows you to apply an adjustment layer to other layers which affects the entire image, or to different layers.
In conjunction with layers, you can also adjust the opacity of individual layers through the use of adjustment layers. Adjustment

Some of the functions are similar to the ones in Photoshop: the elements are similar to the modules (palettes) in the usual Photoshop interface. Others, such as the Healing tool, have been adapted for easier use.
