Microsoft Windows 2003 (Vista): The Volume Shadow Copy Service of Windows 2003 is designed to allow programs to produce snapshot copies of volumes, including partition levels, to create backups, and to recover to any of these copies (shadow copies) for faster access. The Volume Shadow Copy Service also enables administrators to manage server backups. The service, available through the Volume Management Services component of the Server Management Tools Kit, enables administrators to manage snapshot copies of volumes on Windows NT and Windows 2000 servers. The Volume Shadow Copy Service of Windows 2003 is designed to allow
We use the Volume Shadow Copy Service to backup the in-memory cache of our large scale C# web site. We have found that the VSS service to be very good at backing up virtual machines on Hyper-V. The Volume Shadow Copy Service allows a program to perform volume backups while the volume is being written by other applications. This framework facilitates the communication between applications, storage subsystems, and storage management applications (including backup applications) in order to define, persist and exploit point-in-time copies of storage data. Volume Shadow Copy Service SDK Description: Q: Why is there a high percentage of system defragmentation errors in VSS (as discussed in the November 2007 Microsoft Technical Q&A in the following article)? A: We currently do not have an exact reason for this. Although, because VSS has several levels of redundancy, in the event of a backup failure, there is a good chance that VSS will fail back to a mirrored secondary volume. How Many VSS Services Should a Windows 2003 Server Have Q: Does Windows support multiple VSS service instances, and how should I calculate if multiple VSS services are needed on a Windows Server 2003 system? A: The answer is “no”, as the OS cannot run multiple VSS services (although you may be able to run multiple VSS volumes). The Windows Server 2003 operating system does not support running more than one VSS service. Before you decide to run a VSS service, you should evaluate whether the time spent performing VSS based backup is a high value to your organization. (NOTE: “VSS is the preferred solution for backup and recovery of files and folders,” but you should consider the following, if you expect to need multiple VSS volumes for your application: Backup and Recovery b7e8fdf5c8

Some major components of VSS: Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is a service in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 that allows a program to perform volume backups while the volume is being written by other applications. This framework facilitates the communication between applications, storage subsystems, and storage management applications (including backup applications) in order to define, persist and exploit point-in-time copies of storage data. This framework defines the data structures and functionality in the native API. They are generally safe to use. VSS Volume Shadow Copy Service can be classified into the four categories: storage/ backup, file system driver, volume backup driver and volume management component. What is VSS Volume Shadow Copy Service? Explained in further details: How is VSS Volume Shadow Copy Service used? VSS is used by the Windows system to create automatic point-in-time copies of files. It is also used by several backup software to automatically backup data to tape drives and other media. It provides a way to make copies on demand and automatically backup data on your system with tape drives and other removable media. VSS is an advanced version of technology introduced in Windows NT 4.0. You can read more on VSS in Windows NT 4.0 Volume Shadow Copy Service Technology. History of Volume Shadow Copy Service: VSS Technology originates from the OS/2 operating system. It has been developed as part of NT 4.0. The initial release of this technology is known as Volume Shadow Copy by IBM. The Volume Shadow Copy Service is introduced with Windows NT 4.0, which was officially announced on 25 May 1997. The service was called Volume Shadow Copy Service. NT 4.0. Windows 2000 retains the original service name but adds new functionality and features. How is VSS Used? The framework facilitates the communication between applications, storage subsystems, and storage management applications (including backup applications) in order to define, persist and exploit point-in-time copies of storage data. The Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) provides a reliable data shadowing solution that allows these applications to safely backup volumes without interfering with normal data operations, while allowing for the recovery of user files in the event of corruption or system failure. The VSS provides shadowing at both the file and object level and supports both file level backup and differential backup within the file. Details: Backups were initially handled by the operating system and were generally only performed as the result of a system failure or some other similar event. To protect against the operating system becoming non-operational, administrators were required to implement the archiving of volumes on a schedule to create a shadowed copy of the volumes that could be used to restore systems should the operating system become non-operational. Unfortunately, this was an inefficient system that had flaws and inefficiencies associated with it. The data was not stored in the most efficient way and the restore time was excessive. Over time, the amount of time for a restore increased and so did the cost of the method. With the storage management industry growing exponentially, enterprises found themselves under pressure to improve the way they archive data as well as reduce the size of their backup tapes. These pressures were not met until an industry consortium called Storage Administrators Federation was formed. The Storage Administrators Federation is an independent trade group composed of 40 individual members representing 20 companies that have consolidated into a common industry body. The Storage Administrators Federation first held a symposium to discuss these issues and was successful in bringing about legislation allowing for an increase of hard disk drive sizes. With this increase in hard disk size, enterprises now had a solution to support larger backups and more efficient backups of data. With the Storage Administrators Federation supporting this larger hard disk drive sizes, the need for a storage management application to manage these volumes was growing. An application that was now able to manage a larger disk drive size would then permit the storage administrator to build out a centralized, policy based repository that could be used across an enterprise or multiple enterprises. The Storage Administrators Federation then introduced the use of a storage operating system called Novell Netware that was native
