A reason for hope for clean energy transition: developing countries are not the innocent bystanders of climate change but are actually optimistic about their survival potential if they become more active players. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced a new partnership with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) aimed at encouraging organizations to develop sustainability and other management strategies that will help them reach their millennium goals. Starting this month, with the support of the United Nations Development Program, TCS will be partnering with companies across the world to create two new field-based courses focusing on managing environmental risks, climate change and sustainability. “We have the world’s largest environmental consultancy business, so we understand the need and are uniquely positioned to help companies, governments and other organizations develop sustainable practices,” says Chandra Shekhar, global head of the Environment, Science and Engineering practice at TCS, in a statement. “Our business will set up a sustainable management consulting practice in partnership with UNEP to help companies and governments achieve millennium goals through sustainable development and climate change issues,” he adds. Under this initiative, UNEP will fund and co-facilitate the courses, which will be offered over a four-month period in June, July, September and October next year. “There is a great opportunity and need to help organizations do more to manage environmental, social and economic risks,” says UNEP director Achim Steiner. “TCS is well-positioned to promote UNEP’s mission and help companies and governments prepare themselves for the world after 2012, when the Millennium Development Goals come to an end.” TCS said this move is part of its efforts to improve the world’s quality of life in the coming decade. TCS will play a major role in helping UNEP develop sustainable management consulting. In January this year, TCS hosted the second edition of the TCS-UNEP Sustainable Business Forum on Water, Climate and Energy, which was attended by more than 400 high-level participants from both India and over 130 UN member countries and international organizations. TCS is an industry partner of the UN’s Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, and UNEP is its corporate member. In January this year, the firm also launched the TCS Sustainable Cities Initiative in collaboration with UNEP, bringing together several academic institutions, governments, public and private sector organizations with the aim of supporting national and local authorities in developing and implementing sustainable urban planning practices.
