For working with large images and working across multiple desktops, you want a program that has excellent performance. You can run Photoshop CS3 on a recent Mac or PC, but you probably don’t want to do that if you’re doing detailed editing of many layers. The older Photoshop versions are optimized for larger images, but you can save your work in them as well. See the upcoming sidebar “Practice, practice, practice! Using Photoshop CS3,” for tips on keeping your editing work organized and well organized.
The free trial version of Photoshop, called Creative Cloud, offers extra training and usage assistance. It’s limited to 60 images, and you can only make five layers. I don’t recommend Creative Cloud for serious work, but if you just want to experiment with Photoshop, it’s an inexpensive way to get started.
If you’re just starting out, you can get a copy of Photoshop CS3 at a very reasonable price. You may consider Adobe Photoshop Elements, which is like Photoshop CS3 in a smaller, sleeker version, but costs much less — only $79.
You can also buy Photoshop CS3 at Amazon for $119.
Understanding the Lingo
In this chapter, you can expect to see a lot of terms and abbreviations.
If you’ve never taken a course in photo editing, you may be surprised at how much jargon you hear when dealing with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Adobe keeps the terms in their program as short as possible, but they can be confusing. If you have a professional editor look at your images and you get free editing tips, you can probably turn out better images if you sort out the jargon.
Some terms may be unfamiliar to you. So what? They aren’t meant to be simple explanations; they’re just labels. For example, the most basic explanation of a layer is that it’s a location where you place an image. If you know what a layer is, you can then figure out what more advanced features of Photoshop mean in terms of layers.
The different types of layers are as follows:
An image layer: The topmost layer in the stack of layers. You can move images around on this layer or fill a background with a color and texture. You also can apply effects, and you can add and subtract layers to create a composition.
A layer mask: A special type of layer that allows you to hide or reveal parts of an image. A layer mask makes a difference between whether an image
A free version of Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements offers options to purchase add-ons, and advanced options of the traditional version (notably image stabilization and virtual lenses). It has a smaller user interface and uses a set of presets that allow you to change various settings. The free version offers limited image quality and can only be used for personal use.

As computing devices become more ubiquitous in everyday life, the number of devices that can exchange data using the Universal Serial Bus (USB) protocol grows accordingly. Also, it is often desirable to combine data from different sources into a single data stream, such as a multimedia stream. For instance, a USB host can aggregate multiple audio and video streams from multiple USB-compatible devices in order to broadcast a USB-compatible multimedia stream.
The USB protocol can use a special packet called the “Zero-Length Packet” (ZLP) to signal the end of the packet stream to a device. However, use of the ZLP requires the USB protocol to recognize the end of the packet stream at the beginning of the packet stream. To date, the USB protocol has not been extended to handle incomplete packet data streams (i.e., streams that do not include an entire packet in the packet stream)./*

A variety of surgical instruments include an end effector having a blade element that vibrates at ultrasonic frequencies to cut and/or seal tissue (e.g., by denaturing proteins in tissue cells). These instruments include piezoelectric elements that convert electrical power into ultrasonic vibrations, which are communicated along an acoustic waveguide to the blade element. The precision of cutting and coagulation may be controlled by the surgeon’s technique and adjusting the power level, blade edge, tissue traction and blade pressure.
Examples of ultrasonic surgical instruments include the HARMONIC ACE® Ultrasonic Shears, the HARMONIC WAVE® Ultrasonic Shears, the HARMONIC FOCUS® Ultrasonic Shears, and the HARMONIC SYNERGY® Ultrasonic Blades, all by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio. Further examples of such devices and related concepts are disclosed in U.S. Pat.
