For most of us, Photoshop is about so much more than pure image editing. It is also our artist’s portfolio tool, as it is our vehicle for sharing or selling our work. Through the years, I have found it to be an amazingly useful tool that is particularly effective at solving a variety of image manipulation problems. ## Selecting Photos Taking a new picture is simple in Photoshop, but getting the composition right requires thought and experience. This is a bit of a challenge if you’re first starting out, but with practice, you will be far more effective at taking and processing images than just snapping and processing them. You need to think about the subject matter. In this section, I explain how to approach the problem of capturing a perfect image. I also provide a brief overview of some of the tools available in Photoshop. ## Planning your shots So you’ve decided that you’d like to photograph your pet. If you shoot a lot of animals, you may need a different approach to this than if you’re photographing a family portrait. For example, the same portrait of a family that you photograph once a week over the course of a year is going to have completely different lighting situations. In the case of an animal portrait, you need to consider the size of your subject and the lighting you will be using. Don’t fall into the trap of taking your subject and comparing the image to a photo reference. Even a great photo reference doesn’t hold up to a subject who is constantly changing and changing his or her pose. Instead, spend time considering different photo angles, making sure to include the feet and the background. Look for patterns in your subject, such as stripes or fur, and figure out how you can use those patterns to bring the subject to life. For example, if you’re taking a family portrait, include the family dog as a companion in the scene. The dog’s fur can be a wonderful device in a portrait and can add some flare to the composition. Consider how you can take your subject out of the situation in which you find it. If your subject is outside, a green screen can really help bring things together. Before you ever press the shutter release, look at the shot in Photoshop and see how you can take it one step further. You may need to photograph your subject in a studio setting. Or you may need to change the background. Think about any possibilities and how you can bring your subject to life.

Q: How to clear an IList? I have a “List” which contains a bunch of objects. I want to be able to clear the list, but it is not making sense to do so. System.Collections.Generic.IList people = new List(); If i want to clear the list i do this: people.Clear(); or people = new List(); And it works, but if i try to access any of the Persons within the List i get a “Access violation at address…” error. foreach (Person p in people) or foreach (Person p in people) I get the same error. What should I do to get access to the Person objects in the List? A: Well… // this is the reason for the access violation – it’s trying to find the // object in memory, not on the database foreach (Person p in people) There is no need to clear. And in fact – this is intentional – calling Clear() will throw InvalidOperationException. And if you have for example 10.000 Person objects – you’ll have O(10000) access to the same object in memory. A: List is an IList so it overrides the Clear() method, which is probably not what you want. If you want to remove them from the list, then change the line to: people.RemoveAll(p=>p.SomeId == id); Alternatively you can use the Remove(Person person) method: people.Remove(person); A: The only way to do this cleanly is to use a List instead of a List, in which case clear() is valid for you. A List is a general purpose list that doesn’t allow duplicates and knows how to accommodate it when it shows up. If you can’t change the list, then you could get a collection of all the Person objects and use the RemoveAll method of List, or use the Remove method.
