The Falklands War was the longest war involving Great Britain since the War of the Spanish Succession in the 18th century.
The Falklands are a group of islands in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, some 5,000 km from the tip of South America, almost directly south of the tip of Africa. The principal island of the group is East Falkland. The other four islands, all over a few hundred square kilometers in size, are: West Falkland, South Sandwich, Nightingale and Block.
In March, 1982, the United Kingdom announced that it was sending an expeditionary force to the Falkland Islands to assert its sovereignty over the islands. This was both a reaction to Argentina’s seizure of the islands in December, 1981, and was also a response to the Argentinian invasion of the islands in 1982.
Although the British are outnumbered by three to one, and the Argentinians are considerably better prepared, the two sides have roughly similar military forces with the Argentinian Army heavier, and the British armed forces more well trained and equipped. Both sides are well armed with tanks and artillery, with the Argentinians fielding heavier equipment than the British.
Although the conflict lasted only a few months, it was of such importance to Argentina that it has since been described as the Falklands War.
The Argentine government has placed a significant emphasis on portraying the conflict as an act of “war of liberation” in order to explain the timing of the war. Although relations between the countries were mostly tense and occasionally hostile, in December, 1981, Argentina had nearly gone to war with Uruguay over the Beagle Channel dispute. Additionally, the Argentine junta, which seized power in 1976 and established military rule, claimed the Falklands were settled by the Aymara indigenous peoples before the arrival of the Spanish.
The conflict received international attention for the undisputed use of heavy artillery in violation of the Hague Convention, which banned the use of force except in self-defense.
The territory is of geopolitical significance due to its proximity to several areas disputed with Argentina, including Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and the Beagle Channel, the latter being claimed by both Britain and Argentina.
