Origins
Adobe’s first version was released in May of 1987 by John Knoll. It was originally called PowerDRAW. Knoll’s inspiration for PowerDRAW came from the original MacPaint, a program designed by Robert T. Lyons to edit scanned graphics. Lyons released PowerPaint in 1985, and it became the inspiration for PowerDRAW.
The PowerDRAW system worked on 32-bit platforms running DOS, and power users will remember DOS. But it was clearly a photo editing system and as such, it was compatible with the Macintosh.
It was a commercial product, which users purchased for $499.00 in addition to any software they purchased for other purposes. The program was an instructional tool to teach users how to create a portfolio of their work.
Version 1.0 was released in January 1987. It had a built-in feature that made all pictures on a page look the same. The idea behind this feature was to allow you to visually choose different layouts for your page.
The photo resizing feature automatically resized images to an average of 8.5 x 11 inches. This was chosen to be a compromise between the other two most common sizes at the time, 8.5 x 14 inches, and 11 x 14 inches.
The program had several other features, including: working with multiple layers, converting to black and white, adding a border, creating a double page spread and many more.
Another new feature in this version was the ability to copy and paste from or to the clipboard. This is now standard functionality in all version of Photoshop after Photoshop 4.0, although it was originally a feature of PowerPaint.
Version 2.0 was released in August of 1988. It added many more features and made some changes to the interface. It also introduced Adobe’s own file format, DC1 (short for Device-Color Files). This was a true color graphics file, and the DC1 format remained the standard for photo editing programs for about 20 years.
Photoshop 2.0 also added the first layer-based editing system. This allowed the user to do anything they wanted to a whole layer at once, rather than having to edit each image separately.
The printed-page layout feature in PowerDRAW was continued in this version and made it much easier to make a double-page spread.

Do blind people have problems seeing their hands?
It seems to me that many of the signs involving the sense of vision (e.g. squiggly lines or an arrow pointing to an object with an arrow pointing to it – by this I mean I want to confirm that the arrow on the same page points in the same direction as the arrow on the page, etc.) are intended for sighted people who have two eyes.
However, a blind person only has one eye and would not have squiggly lines or arrow pointing to objects. Or would they? Is it possible that they recognize the shapes of objects by the sense of hearing?

An image recognition algorithm that has been created by searching for all the instructions on how an object appears in imagery as described in this paper.
Blind Man’s Image Recognition
It is possible to create an algorithm that interprets “squiggly lines” and “arrows pointing to objects” when they are presented to a blind man. If such an algorithm exists, it would be able to work even if the image is cut in half and the lower portion only is visible. This makes sense for an algorithm created by searching for all the instructions on how an object appears in imagery. For example, if one object was a “squiggly line” and the other was a “squiggly line” then it would recognize this as one squiggly line. However, if one object was a “squiggly line” and the other an “arrow pointing to an object” then it would recognize this as a “squiggly line” and a “arrow pointing to an object” even if the objects were a completely different shape.
An Algorithm for recognizing Squiggly Lines
The following image is of a fully visible object. Once the shape is found it is obviously obvious.
Now lets look at the image rotated 90 degrees. Note the small sliver of the top half. The other small sliver of the image was rotated 90 degrees from this piece.

James Ference
James Ference (born October 11, 1974) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who played in the National Hockey League for the Buffalo Sabres, Tampa Bay Lightning, Calgary Flames and New York Islanders. He was the last remaining member of a new three-way centre partnership for the New York Islanders and Buffalo Sabres, formed to replace the departed trio of Jason Allison, John LeClair and Rick Martin.
Playing career
Ference was drafted fifth overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut playing with the Sabres that season. He played for his hometown Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the 1992–93 and 1993–94 seasons. He then played for Rochester Americans of the AHL from 1994 to 1996.
Ference played four seasons for the Maine Mariners of the American Hockey League before signing with the Sabres in 1999–00. The Sabres placed Ference on the injured list for five consecutive seasons, starting in 2001–02, due to recurring neck problems. He returned for the 2005–06 season, however his early season struggles resulted in him being traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning on February 3, 2006.
Ference started the 2006–07 season with the Chicago Wolves, the Lightning’s AHL affiliate. He was recalled by the Lightning on November 1, 2006, and appeared in his first career NHL game the following night. On April 2, Ference scored his first NHL goal in a 3–0 win against the Phoenix Coyotes.
Ference returned to the Lightning during the 2007–08 season. The 2006–07 NHL lockout caused the NHL to cancel the entire season, meaning Ference had a chance to play in the 2008 NHL All-Star Game as a replacement for the injured Scott Niedermayer. Ference was selected to play in the game against the Ottawa Senators in the first period, but was later replaced by the Vancouver Canucks’ Manny Malhotra. Ference helped the Lightning reach the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals and face the Ottawa Senators, but he could not help the Lightning to their first Stanley Cup in six years. Ference made his fourth career All-Star appearance in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Ference signed a two-year contract with the Calgary Flames on July 1, 2010. In the 2010–11 season, Ference was placed on waivers by the Flames on January 2, 2011. He was claimed by the New York Islanders on January 5, 2011
