What Photoshop is and what Photoshop isn’t

Edit: Since this article was published, Adobe has released Photoshop Elements. It is free and it’s a great step up from Photoshop.

It’s been said that Photoshop is the industry standard in image editing. In fact, in the un-initiated, Photoshop is considered more than just an image editing tool. As someone who uses Photoshop on a daily basis, I can tell you that is a big, big, big misconception. While Photoshop is one of the most powerful and versatile applications out there, the amount of time required to learn all of Photoshop’s idiosyncrasies is taxing on the average user. Photoshop is simply not designed for the average person who just wants to make a few quick changes to a digital image and have it done.

It’s also no coincidence that Photoshop is Adobe’s flagship product. Photoshop is built on a level of complexity that most people simply don’t need. There are well over 10 layers of features in Photoshop that even the more seasoned user needs to know about in order to truly understand and master the program.

I’ll give you an example. Right now, as I write this article, I have a layer that has two styles applied to it. The layer is below the horizonal and vertical lines that are added to the image. The styles can be seen clearly when I apply them to the layer.

I made a small adjustment to the layer’s blue and white color replacement sliders (as seen in the window in the bottom left of the screen). I took the two sliders up together and used the create new… option.

The new layer was named “Style 1”. This gives me a new layer that is now attached to the “Style 1” layer. I then moved the new layer below the “Style 1” layer to place it below the lines.

I went to the Layer/Layer Mask options and enabled the layer mask for the “Style 1” layer. This makes the layer’s background transparent.

The portion of the layer that was initially turned off is now visible. The original layer still remains and is only partially visible. I can use this layer to take the place of the line-based image that’s being used for the layer mask.

Now, I can go to the Style 1 style and adjust a color slider. The layer mask remains visible in the window for the style and makes the associated layer transparent. This allows me to see what’s going on in the

Some key differences are summarized here:

Fewer editing tools.

Simple to use with fewer options to confuse you.

Access to fewer image editing techniques.

Less accurate object detection and recognition.

Improved performance.

Greater file size reduction (we hope).

While Photoshop Elements is not intended to be a replacement for professional photographers and designers, or even for do-it-yourself enthusiasts, it is a nice substitute for Photoshop to use if you can’t afford to invest in a full version of Photoshop. It is also a great tool for beginners and even if you are an experienced Photoshop user.

Editing Tools

The Photoshop Elements Editor has one purpose and one purpose only: to help you edit and manipulate images.

The basic tools in the editor are pretty much the same as in Photoshop. Most of them appear to work in the same way and some of the tools, like the Clone Stamp tool, are almost identical.

There are tools for converting images from one format to another, fixing problems, cropping and resizing images, creating new images, retouching images, removing unwanted objects and more.

Import/Export Tools

Importing an image from other apps or from a camera or scanner can be a chore in Photoshop Elements. However it’s a good alternative if you only have one computer and need to access your images on more than one.

Export tools let you save images to a variety of file formats as well as to a standard image file format such as JPEG or PNG.

Creating a New Image

One of the most important tools in the editor is the New Image button at the top of the screen. If you select a picture in the editor and then click the New Image button, an empty canvas appears in the middle of the image.

When you open a new image file, you can edit it right away on the new canvas or you can switch to the old canvas. There are three editing canvases in Photoshop Elements. By default, you can only open one editing canvas at a time.

You can save a new image to your computer by hitting the Save button.

Editing an Image

The Editing Toolbar at the bottom of the editor contains all of the tools you might need to edit an image. Most of these tools are the same as in Photoshop.

For example, there are buttons for straightening, rotating, cropping, and
