“Halcyon 6: The Art of Halcyon” is a sprite-based puzzle game. In this game, your job is to manipulate a universe in order to bring it back to it’s former glory.
Your game begins in a dark and mysterious world full of questions and strange creatures. A call comes to you, your mysterious guide, informing you that you have to find a way to the Moon.
Along the way, you must work together with an incredible cast of characters who each have their own unique abilities and personalities.
Together with these characters, the Moon seems within reach. Or is it? You need to unlock its secrets, and this means solving fantastic puzzles.

Asylum’s QuadWorlds is a 2013 puzzle game coming to Steam, Windows, Mac and Linux.
It’s a 4×4 grid with cubes representing different colors. The overall goal of the game is to connect a green cube to another green cube.
The number of steps needed is actually a puzzle itself. At the end of the puzzle each color that was solved is rewarded a bonus point, which adds up to a final score.
This is a remake of an old 2×2 demo that I made for the keynote of the RedBalloon GameJam 2013. The demo was a fun way to show the concept of the game.
With QuadWorlds I wanted to explore another concept, while still keeping the same 2×2 puzzle demo.
The puzzle demo will still be in the game, but it will be much more accessible for the player.
Since it will now be part of a full game, I made a bunch of changes on the way:

My name is Alex. I’m the artist who has been working on Halcyon 6: Lightspeed Edition for the last two years. What you see in the game’s intro, is all my work. Along with the awesome creation of sound composer Kiel Meadors and lead game developer Josh. I hope you enjoy the art as much as I did when creating it.
Pre-Production
During my first month of work on Halcyon 6, I was given art direction for the game from the creators of the original game, Jonny and Rina, via Skype. The initial goal was to meet the tight deadline, and deliver a PS4 version of the game without any of the visual features (such as character models, higher resolution textures, etc) of the original release.
When the time came to make art for the release, my role as lead art director was to choose which direction to take for each environment in the game. This often meant finalizing decisions that the game was based on.
During my initial call with Jonny and Rina, I was given a series of text files with notes on what I should focus on. These text files also contained some of the visual decisions and references the game creators were drawing from. The goal was to create a world that felt unique, without running into too many design problems and limitations that would need to be solved later.
I began with a task of creating my own ‘look’ for the game and setting the tone for the entire project. This included choosing the level of detail I wanted in the visuals, as well as choosing some of the ‘look’ for the environments in the game. During this process I was also playing the game daily, providing feedback and test builds to the game creators, to make sure I was capturing everything they wanted from the final project.
Art Direction
Once the art direction was set, the creators and I began to put it into action. By using the art direction, I was able to develop the art style and lighting that would help create the unique feel for the Halcy
