# Automation and Plug-ins: For the Producer or the Professional

If you’re a production designer, you must be able to use multiple programs, often editing in different formats and not knowing how your files will end up on the screen until you actually see them on the screen. You use the tools you’ve used in your profession to add the finishing touches and then export to a format that can be output to film or play back on a monitor. In other words, you use your own tools as well as the tools of others.

As you explore the Photoshop program, you discover that designers often use Photoshop and its various plug-ins as the primary design tool, and Elements as a secondary tool. In other words, you use Photoshop as a tool to design and then you use Elements to retouch what you’ve designed.

A plug-in is an add-on for Photoshop that is made available to you. The plug-in is a set of

Can I Use Photoshop Elements?

The official website lists Photoshop Elements as a software that can be downloaded from the official website of Adobe. The software is available for both Windows and Mac.

Open Canvas Size

The open canvas size is the resolution of the image that you can use to work on. You can double or halve the size of your canvas as you wish. Open the Save As dialog box in Elements by selecting File > Save As. Once the Save As dialog box appears, select the type of file format you want to save the image as, for instance, a JPEG.

Open the Open dialog box by selecting Window > Open.

Open the Photoshop Elements canvas by moving the crosshairs to the right or left or middle of the image using the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl + the direction and Ctrl + and Ctrl +-.

Types of files supported by Photoshop Elements

Let’s look at the types of files you can edit using Photoshop Elements.

You can use an image of any format in Elements.

JPEG, TIF and JPEG 2000 files are among the image formats supported by Elements.

Other types of images supported by Elements include

.PSD (Adobe Photoshop documents)

.PCL (Picasa Collection)

If you want to open an image with a different format, you have to save the file using that format as well. You cannot simply open an image that you have opened in your earlier session. Saving the file of the image would copy the image with the new file format.

Elements supports the notion of the open canvas size. It is the resolution of the image that you can use to work on. You can double or halve the size of the canvas as you wish.

You can increase the size of the canvas to suit your requirements. You can resize the canvas by selecting the Rectangular Marquee tool in the toolbox in the top-left corner of the screen. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + and select the Resize tool. If the tool is disabled, you can enable it by pressing the same shortcut on the keyboard and then, from the toolbox, selecting the Resize tool.

Counting instances of a field in a gsutil ls

I have a directory that consists of a bunch of zip files. Let’s say that the following files exist in the directory:

I’m trying to count how many zip files exist in the directory, so my output will look like this:
/home/user/Desktop/sample 2
/home/user/Desktop/sample/test 2
/home/user/Desktop/sample/test2 1
/home/user/Desktop/sample/test3 1

I’m trying to do this in gsutil, but I haven’t been able to find how to do this. So far, I’ve been using this:
gsutil ls -l -r /home/user/Desktop/sample

But it only gives me a list of the files in the directory, not the number of files.

You can use the GNU-way of counting file attributes.
find -x \! -newer /var/spool/computing/mydir -exec gsutil ls -l {} \; | grep “^-=” | awk ‘{print $NF}’

This will output one file per line, which is what you want. Change {print $NF} to {print NF} to get a row per file, but I prefer using the GNU-way 🙂
For example:
[me@~]$ ls -l
-rw-r–r– 1 me me 0 Dec 24 23:18 test
-rw-r–r– 1 me me 0 Dec 24 23:21 sample
[me@~]$ find -x \! -newer test -exec gsutil ls -l {} \; | grep “^-=” | awk ‘{print $NF}’

PS: Thanks to @osboxes and @bsaunders for the corrections.

In addition to the answer mentioned above, you can also do
grep -c “(/[^/]*\?)$” /home

Possible to use methods from interfaces?

I have a client which I don’t have too much control over. That client’s interface, I have no control over.
The interface has a method:
GetAll(ID). It returns a List.
How can I call this method, and have it use my own List type?
I have a method:
public void ListAll(List list)
using (IQueryable myQueryable = Db.MyType.Where(m => m.ID == 1))
foreach (MyType myType in myQueryable)

I want to be able to call:

Do I need to just pass a different IList into my own ListAll? This seems kind of redundant.
I know that I could, theoretically, just cast the List and then add the elements, but I am looking for the best solution.
My question is: What would be the best way to go about this?

Just use dynamic
ListAll(dynamic list);
