I had been calling for this development for some time, but this confirmation, coming via a statement by Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, is a bit of a surprise. Since word of a March start date surfaced last month, I had been predicting that Avatar‘s wide-release debut would be just about a week from now, but Staggs is sticking with the original release date.
Why the delay? Because, according to Staggs, the release of Avatar would have only one theater in each market. He stated, “The film is so big and so big an event that it’s just not possible for it to be in all locations on its opening day.” I can sympathize with Disney’s reasoning, but as I’ve written before, the fact of the matter is that Disney’s Disney-owned theaters — especially Disney’s D-Boxes — are capable of showing very high-quality 3D films.
It’s worth noting that Disney confirmed the wide-release of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, which opened last month. The ability to flexibly control and guide the focus of attention is a critical developmental achievement in macaque monkeys. To begin to understand how this ability develops, we assessed the cognitive control and response learning of Macaca nemestrina during the first two years of life, using a challenging visual task in which monkeys had to control attention to search for the correct item among three similar distractors. We used a computational model of attentional control and an associative learning model of item selection to examine how the development of cognitive control over attention could be achieved. We found that when attentional control was directly associated with the control of visual search, it could be learned by five-month-olds. By contrast, when the control of visual search was not directly associated with attentional control, younger infants (3-month-olds) did not learn this form of control. Our results suggest that there are critical periods during which attentional control is learned, and that without direct instruction on how to control attention, monkeys will not learn to selectively control attention, and will be unable to acquire the ability to flexibly regulate their attention..
