Now to create the application icons, it is important that you first create a transparent background.

So:

Plug-in: Vector/Pattern/Rectangle/Square/Star

Object: Rectangle/Square/Star

Step 4:

Now you want to use the ‘Rectangle Mask’ tool that is available in the toolbar to create a rectangular shaped mask around the icon.

So:

Select the Rectangle tool

Now click and drag the Rectangle Mask tool on to the icon image

Step 5:

You now need to add a black area so that the icon is not all solid, you need to use the black area to mask off the edges of the original icon.

So:

The black area acts as the mask so nothing from the original image will be visible

Using the selection tool hold down the Alt key and click on the icon so that you can create a selection around it
