## Chapter 10: Basic Tools
Photoshop has a variety of tools that you can use to open, create, and alter images, including the Brush Tool and the Pencil Tool (see Figure 10-1). Because some people may be new to Photoshop, this chapter includes a brief description of each tool and an illustration of how to use it. This chapter shows you where to find each tool on your toolbars.

## The Photoshop Brush
The Brush tool, as shown in Figure 10-2, is the best tool for editing and painting images. In addition to being found on the toolbars (as discussed in the following sections), it can be found inside the Brush toolbox, found under the File menu (Figure 10-3). The brush settings that control how the brush strokes are created are found on the Options bar (as shown in Figure 10-2).

The present invention relates to a method for calibrating a measurement device of this type, and a corresponding measurement device, and in particular to a method for calibrating a measurement device of this type that utilizes a hemispherical test target.
In the realm of industrial process control and automation, there are a number of applications which require measuring the reflectance of a surface, be it the surface of a chromatographic plate (e.g. a chromatography plate), or the surface of a photoconductor, or the surface of a color filter, etc. To achieve high accuracy of such measurements, it is important to know as precisely as possible the reflectance of the surface to be measured. This is because errors in the reflectance measurement may originate not only from the measurement device itself, but also from the ambient light conditions, or from the surface properties of the surface to be measured (e.g. color, as well as a varying surface reflectance in the case of a plate with an adsorbed coating).
A common way of measuring the reflectance of a surface is to use a standardized illumination source (e.g. a calibrated halogen lamp) and to shine light onto the surface under test. This light reflected off the surface is then measured by the measurement device. Since, however, the surface can have different colors, and in order to obtain a correct surface reflectance, it is necessary to determine a reference reflectance. One way to accomplish this is by performing a two-color calibration, in which two different areas of the surface under test are illuminated with light of different colors. For a given surface, the ratio of the two measured reflectances relates to the surface reflectance. This is illustrated schematically in FIGS. 1A, 1B, and 1C, in which FIG. 1A schematically shows an example of a two-color calibration in which two areas of a surface under test are illuminated with different colors (e.g. red and green), FIG. 1B schematically shows how the reflectance of the surface under test would be identical to the reflectance of the surface under test if a two-color calibration had been performed, and FIG. 1C schematically shows how the surface reflectance is only equivalent to the reflectance of the surface under test if a two-color calibration has been performed.
