Laying the Groundwork for Image Manipulation
Most images have some type of background that doesn’t change with the object we’re capturing. Figure 6-1 shows the difference in color between the background and the top of the image.

Here are a few techniques for removing a background:
Copy the background. The Copy command copies a layer and places a duplicate copy. Both the original layer and the duplicate layer remain in your layers palette but can be treated as separate layers on the same document. After you apply the background color to the layer that you want to be the background color for the rest of the image, copy the layer to a new document. (I talk about the Copy command in Chapter 15.)
Hide the layer. Turn the layer off. After the background is applied, select the layer, and choose Layer⇒Hide Layers or press Shift+Ctrl+H. The layer is no longer visible. The layer still exists, but it’s not visible on your final product. This method is perfect when you want to keep a layer with a specific gradient or texture visible while you apply a different layer behind it. The layer is still there, but it’s no longer visible until you hide it again.
Clone the layer. You can use the Clone command to create a duplicate layer. In the Layers window, select the layer, and then choose Layer⇒Clone or press Shift+Ctrl+C. After the background is applied, select the layer you want to have the background color and choose Layer⇒Paste.
Get rid of the layer. If you’re sure that you’re going to redo your image, you can quickly remove a layer by choosing Layer⇒Hide or press Ctrl+H. After removing a layer, it disappears from the Layers palette and from your image.
Change the blending mode. Apply a different blending mode to a layer so that your colors react to the image’s background. For example, you can create a poster with a background color that relates to the rest of the image by applying a layer mask and setting the blending mode to Screen.

Choroidal neovascularization following adjuvant therapy for melanoma: a possible hematological complication.
To investigate the incidence and outcome of choroidal neovascularization following adjuvant treatment for malignant melanoma. Retrospective, noncomparative case series. Retrospective chart review of all patients who had received adjuvant treatment for malignant melanoma at a single institution between 1 January 1987 and 31 December 1995. Cases of bilateral or unilateral choroidal neovascularization in 10 patients were analysed. Five patients developed secondary choroidal neovascularization following adjuvant subthreshold radiation therapy (10 fractions of 3.5 Gy each) administered at a median of 14 months after definitive surgical therapy for malignant melanoma. Two patients developed neovascularization 6 and 7 years after completion of adjuvant subthreshold radiation therapy. The median time to diagnosis of subthreshold radiation-induced neovascularization was 23 months (range 3-65 months). In 3 patients, radiation was administered as an adjuvant strategy after a melanoma recurrence; in the other 2 patients subthreshold radiation therapy was given in an adjuvant setting. In all 5 patients who developed secondary choroidal neovascularization following adjuvant subthreshold radiation therapy, this was clinically significant and required treatment. In contrast, none of the 5 patients treated with adjuvant subthreshold radiation therapy alone developed choroidal neovascularization. The median time to development of choroidal neovascularization following adjuvant subthreshold radiation therapy was 23 months. Choroidal neovascularization was clinically significant and required treatment in all 5 patients who developed radiation-induced choroidal neovascularization. Adjuvant subthreshold radiation therapy carries a risk of choroidal neovascularization.
