The first step in using Photoshop is to open your image file(s). To open an image in Photoshop, follow these steps:
1. Choose Edit Image.
2. A box opens with your image.
3. Choose Open.
Sometimes, Photoshop may want you to save your current image file before opening another image file. In that case, you can choose Save As.
4. The Save As dialog box opens.
5. Navigate to the folder in which you want to save the image file.
You can also choose Folder to save your file to the folder you’re currently in. Click Save.
Photoshop gives you the option of a zoom level for your image. A zoom level refers to the portion of the image you can see on the monitor. The default zoom setting is 100%. You can increase or decrease the percentage to zoom in or zoom out, respectively. Your image may be sized to fit your monitor or you may see a larger portion of your image on the screen. You can see how much of your image you see on the monitor in the bottom-right corner of the image window (Figure 2-5). You may also notice a small three-pointed arrow in the corner of your image. Click it to zoom in on that part of the image. Click it again to zoom out. You can also use the Zoom slider to zoom in and out of your image.

If you have many images to view, it is helpful to scroll the image window down. You can also zoom in and out by dragging the zoom slider.
6. When you’re ready, click Open.
To quickly upload images from your computer to the Internet, choose File Send To Internet. The window that opens enables you to drag and drop your images into the window. You also have the option of choosing a web service to automatically upload the photos you select. An example of a web service is Shutterfly. (See Chapter 17 for more information.)

The far east of Australia has been battered by so much tropical cyclone fury during this cold, wet season that climate change is easily visible, scientists have revealed.
Across the vast East Australian seaboard, hundreds of weather stations and national and local fire, police, water and emergency services have reported temperature trends showing an increase in cyclone activity since 2004.
About 30 cyclones – tropical storms that form over open waters such as the Coral Sea or Indian Ocean – have formed in Australia in the past four years, compared with 16 in the previous 22 years.
That growth in cyclones and the number of storm-related deaths are usually cited as reasons to argue that climate change is increasing the frequency and strength of extreme weather.
Among the factors that have contributed to the rise in activity are cyclones fuelled by El Nino, a natural weather phenomenon responsible for unpredictable weather patterns in east-central and south-eastern Australia.
Australian health authorities have reported three deaths, two of them children, since 2009 in association with cyclones in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Mark Bentley, the director of climate change and weather for the Bureau of Meteorology, said the number of cyclones had risen since 2004 because of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
“There’s a mix of a number of things contributing to this,” he said. “Many of the storms have been influenced by events in the Pacific. Some have been influenced by storms in the Indian Ocean.”
Professor Bentley said changes in sea temperatures, increased sea levels, and changes in wind patterns were contributing to this unpredictable weather.
“Certainly during a cyclone there’s sea surface heat transport, which causes downwelling of the ocean surface in particular regions. That’s what results in the generation of the strongest cyclonic rainfall bands,” he said.
“And often you’ll see storms tracking in across the east coast of Australia with two or three separate storm systems, moving independently of each other, which is very rare. The third – and potentially the strongest – storm system will often be the one that comes down the coast along the three-day clock when the sea currents are moving very slowly. That’s where you get the most extreme event.”
He cautioned, however, that it would be incorrect to say cyclones were growing in strength.
“You may have a typhoon from the Philippines or an extra-tropical storm from the Gulf of Alaska that may make landfall in New South Wales or Queensland,”
